Ten Notes on Page 260

Page 260 is here, and here are some notes about it!

1. Look at that Jason Occult–after hours of battling that huge team-up of heroes, there’s not a scratch on him! That guy’s powerful! Which is why it took me so long, as I mentioned in an earlier one of these blog posts, to figure out the method by which Jason became the Ultimage. I needed something that could justify his phenomenal cosmic power.

2. In case you forgot, Jason used the cloak and Skelman the Sorcerer’s spellbook to channel the ENERGIES OF THE MULTIVERSE ITSELF!

3. I normally post these notes earlier in the week, but I was sick. I’ve been sick, off and on, for weeks. The worst of it was, let’s see, a couple of weeks ago, around Monday the 28th. I pretty much slept all day that day. Then we got some days off school because of the cold, and that gave me more time to rest, which was helpful. Then I felt great! Free from the sickness! And then, a couple of days ago, I came home and collapsed, unusually exhausted, and the next day I had a sore throat, and now the mucus . . . I’m just saying, it seems random, every day, whether I’ll feel well or not, and what symptoms I’ll have.

4. My instinct is to feel guilty and beat myself up when I, for example, don’t write a blog post in a timely manner, but my loving wife keeps reminding me that it’s important to rest when you’re sick.

5. This page and the first half of the next page are the climax of our story. At this point, it’s pretty much all out there, you can see where we’ve been going with this. What’s left is all epilogue. It’s a weird feeling, after months of planning, outlining, counting pages, and hoping I could squeeze everything in, to actually be at the end.

6. The caption in panel 4 says, ” Where had this need to control everything come from? A sense of inadequacy? A childhood trauma? What hurt him so badly?” On the one hand, I think it would be a fair criticism of this story to say that the reader never really learns Jason’s motivation, that it’s always kind of vague. On the other hand, the whole story is from Brianna’s point of view, and, as this caption demonstrates, she doesn’t really get where he’s coming from or why he’s like this. Maybe there’s a perfectly good explanation, but she and the reader don’t know it. That may seem like a cop-out, but it works for me.

7. I wrote a novella called The Nihilist’s Curse (coming soon!), and when I shared it with my writers’ group, they were appalled at one of the characters’ world-view. That character was the nihilist referred to in the title, and he explains about how he doesn’t care about morality, that he only cares about himself, and he thinks everyone else feels the same way, but they just lie about it. My friends in writers’ group are kind, generous, loving people, and they couldn’t believe how awful this character was, and they questioned whether he would actually have friends and be able to function in society.

I replied that, not only do people like this really exist, but there are a lot of them, many of whom are very successful. These are the people who run the world–there are plenty of CEOs, politicians, and other movers and shakers who care only about their own power, wealth, and personal comfort, and don’t give a damn about anyone else. At a certain level of society, I would say this kind of attitude is the norm, rather than an exception. I don’t think the character I wrote was that unusual, except maybe in how honestly he articulated his worldview.

8. It’s occurred to me that my assumption that the average American CEO has the same basic mindset as a super-villain probably affects the way I write my villains. None of the villains in the Electric Team so far–Major Ager, Dr. February, Larzipan, Jason Occult, etc.–has had any inciting incident that turned them evil. They’re just greedy jerks. It would be nice to think that you need a traumatic even, like Dr. Doom’s losing his mother, or Lex Luthor’s losing his hair, to turn you into a villain, but it seems like many people are just naturally greedy. Yes, I think Dr. February is evil; no, I don’t think she’s any worse of a person than, say, Mitch McConnell.

9. Which brings me back to Jason Occult. From my perspective, Jason doesn’t really change much over the course of the story. When they first meet, Jason tells Brianna that she’s special, that they’re both special, and they deserve better. He means it; he thinks that he and Brianna are superior, that normal rules do not apply to them, and that other people exist to serve them. There are lots of people who have this sort of attitude but never have the power to act on it. It’s the power that makes the difference.

10. It’s like in Bonnie & Clyde, where Clyde impressed Bonnie at first, with all his talk about how she deserves better, and he’s going to show her the world, but near the end, when they’ve lost people they love, and nearly died, and the cops are closing in and it’s all gone wrong, and Bonnie asks Clyde what he would do differently if he had it all to do over again, and he says he’d do his bank jobs differently, and starts to talk about the logistics of it, and you can tell by Bonnie’s expression that she’s realized that he’s not the man she thought he was, he’s limited by his imagination, he can never dream of anything more than robbing banks.

Ten Notes on Page 259

Hello, world! Page 259 is out, so why not read a few notes about it?

1. I like the background in panel 2. Looks like they’re in a fancy castle, which they are.

2. The last time we saw Brianna and Jaxula talking, he was locked in a dungeon, and she was arguing with him. Obviously they formed a connection during those conversations; he’s showing up here to warn her, and she’s not even pretending to want to throw him back in a cell.

3. Jaxula almost wasn’t on this page; my original plan was for Jason to walk in on the first panel of this page, and then they’d talk about the tear in space/time . . . and then we’d have to work Jax in after that. It was only last week, a day or so before I sent Sam the script for this page, that I realized it would work better if Jax walked in first, he could do the exposition about the rip in space/time, have a moment, and THEN Jason could walk it. Makes the whole ending flow better, trust me. The only problem was, I worried we wouldn’t have enough space to show Brianna hide Jax.

4. Jax is a heroic guy, so he wouldn’t just submit to “hiding in the closet” on his own–he was all ready to go up against the Ultimage, even though it meant certain death. Good thing Brianna wasn’t going to put up with that nonsense.

5. But how to fit in the sequence of Brianna zapping Jaxula and then hiding him in a closet? I realized we could “tell don’t show” her putting him in the closet via a caption, and hoped Sam would be able to squeeze in the zapping. I thought we would still see Brianna zap Jax, so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw Sam’s layout; it was her idea to show only the sound effect, “ZAP!”, in its own panel.

6. When Sam did the layout, she put Jax and Brianna in the center of the page, facing each other. I liked it, and asked her to see if she could find a way to make those images really pop, like, with the background color or similar. She made the space/time rip visible at the tops of the panels, in a way that almost looks like there’s blood leaking down on them, which is cool.

7. I’m happy I was able to work in a Super Team reference here–the Super Team is still doing stuff! They liberated the prisoners from the dungeon! Again, I want it to feel like there’s a whole elaborate, multi-stage conflict going on, that’s mostly taking place off-panel.

8. I’m pretty sure it was Miss Mousie who led the raid on the dungeon, while Bee Man was leading the attack on Jason Occult, keeping him distracted.

9. There’s the Ultimage in the last panel . . . man, he fought all those heroes for hours, and he’s barely tired! It’s a delicate balance, making your villain ultra-powerful, but not so powerful that he could just automatically kill all the heroes. Fortunately, I’ve read a lot of comic books, and given this sort of thing a lot of thought, so I think we pulled it off.

10. Man, we’re close to the end now. You can feel it, right?  I just sent Sam the polished version of the script for page 260 today, and I’m nervous about it. . . these next two pages are the climax, the payoff, everything we’ve been building to for the last six months. I hope it works. Tune in next time to find out!

Ten Notes on Page 258

Page 258 came out on Tuesday!

To battle the Ultimage!

Here are some notes.

1. Hurray, look at all those heroes fighting the Ultimage! I love seeing these guys teamed up and fighting together. Great to see Marvel Doggy, in the upper left, flying into action.

2. Pictured, started at the middle of the lefthand side and proceeding clockwise:
Bee Lady, Flame Girl, Marvel Doggy, Octopus Jones, Space Blot, Bee Man, Lady Fairplay, some Laser Ponies, Sonic Boom, Skelman the Sorcerer, Yarko the Great, Beowulf, some hobomancers, Bart Hill.

3. Sam asked if Jason Occult was supposed to be a giant in this scene; I told her that Josh had drawn him as a giant previously, but since this is a battle that went on for hours, she could choose to draw him before or after the point at which he gets really big.

The problem with him being a giant is that it’s hard to fit the non-giant characters who can’t fly into the scene. Josh solved this problem by putting the heroes on an elevated spot, around the level of the Ultimage’s waist, with the Ultimage in the background; Sam solved it by having him kneel.

4. I tried to do some sketches to figure out what the battle could look like, so I could make some suggestions to Sam, but I quickly gave up. There were so many characters, and so many possibilities, I just left to her to her own devices, and I’m very happy with what she did.

5. Like I said, this is a battle that lasted for hours, and there were more people present than the ones pictured here; this is just a snapshot, a single moment in time, that stands in for the larger conflict. I like the idea that the reader can imagine the much bigger battle, with all its twists and turns and daring maneuvers, that it’s a beautiful and perfect comic book crossover event that only exists in your head.

6. As I’ve mentioned before, Kurt Busiek’s Astro City was a big influence on the way I wrote this issue, and the idea that you can basically refer to storylines from comic book series that don’t exist, and write what happens in between the big moments.

7. I’ve enjoyed bringing in other people’s characters, because it gives more of a sense of scope, that this is a cosmic crisis spreading out beyond the worlds I’ve created and into other people’s fictional worlds. That’s how it feels to me, anyway.

8. I’ve mentioned several times that I gave Sam reference of the Anti-Monitor fighting super-heroes from the cover of Crisis on Infinite Earths #12, but this is really reminiscent of Mordru fighting the Legion of Super-Heroes. Mordu being a giant wizard with a funny hat and all . . .

9. At the bottom of the page, we return to Brianna’s perspective, which is where we’ll stay for the rest of the story. Not many pages left now!

10. But what is that weird shiny blobby thing? Don’t worry, we’ll find out on the next page, coming in just a few days!
