Meet Crocus

When people find out that The Electric Team was created by my daughter (Abby) and me (Leighton), they often ask if I have any plans to get my son (Jackson) involved in the comic. Up until recently, Jackson has been too young to really participate. Since he recently turned four, though, he’s gotten interested in The Electric Team and has started sharing ideas. Many of them are not viable for copyright reasons–for instance, “Iron Man should join the Electric Team!” and “Optimus Prime should join the Electric Team!”–but he recently came up with a concept for a villain that we’re hoping to use soon.

Today, though, on page 102, Jackson and Loving Wife Alice both become contributors to the comic, with the official debut (after a cameo appearance on page 98) of Crocus. Crocus is a stuffed toy that Alice made for Jackson; Jackson named him and gave him a personality. A beautiful collaboration between mother and son, and now another part of the mosaic that is The Electric Team.

Here’s the real life Crocus:

Crocus

I like how Sam captured his essence, while also giving him hands and a mouth.

Teamwork & Artwork

I haven’t written a blog post in awhile, so even though this is late, I’d like to thank the incredibly talent writer/artist/cartoonist/game designer Josh Burnett for his stellar work on the “Swords & Serpents” story.

His contributions were not just limited to the visual side of things, either. When I wrote the script, I couldn’t come up with a name I liked for the warrior hero, so I wrote [WARRIOR HERO] where his name should be, and asked Josh if he had any ideas. Josh came up with the name Druuj the Slayer, and that’s what we went with. So we co-created Druuj . . . except, if Josh named him, and designed the visual, do I really get any co-creator credit? I wrote the script, so that counts for something, right?

I was excited to work with Josh, but now I am equally excited about Sam Albert’s return to art duties.  Chapter 4 started on Tuesday, showing the Electric Team relaxing around a campfire after the defeat of Major Ager at the end of Chapter 3.  Today shows the release of a new page, again with characters sitting and having a conversation. I am always hesitant to write too many pages like this, because it’s hard to make a group of people sitting around talking visually interesting, and can get boring for the artist. But I like spending some time with the characters hanging out, like when the X-Men used to play softball, and Sam did a good job bringing the characters to life and making the scene work. But don’t worry, action fans, we’ll be launching into the meat of our story on the very next page.

Also, credit where it’s due . . . Abby helped me figure out what the characters would talk about on this latest page.

And finally, I am shocked to realize that today is the one year anniversary of when we posted the very first page of The Electric Team. That was more of a test, and we didn’t really officially launch the comic until the 25th, but this is still a milestone. If you haven’t already, it’s a good time to go back and read the story from the beginning.

Burn the Witch!

We’re still on track, giving you three new installments of “Swords and Serpents” each week. Page 89 is now live! I know I’ve said it before, but no really, this is Josh’s best-looking page yet.

I really enjoy seeing this moment brought to life. When I was first trying to figure out this story, about Mr. Amazing going to a village of barbarians, the idea that made it all click for me was “And they can try to burn him at the stake!”

It’s an exciting turn of events, and we’re only halfway through the story. Don’t worry, the roller coaster ride of thrills is going to continue on Friday . . . with or without you. So don’t miss out! Be here, or be vaguely disappointed in the life choices you have made!!!
