Wow! Time flies! It’s now been exactly two years since we started serializing The Electric Team. Hah, just kidding, we actually started on June 25th, 2015, but I was busy last week, so let’s pretend like it’s been exactly two years. It’s close.

In honor of this MOMENTOUS OCCASION, we have decided to have a sale. For one week only, our latest issue, The Electric Team #4, is 50% off the regular price. Fifty percent! We’re out of our minds! These deals are crazy!

Welcome to Catagonia

The scene on today’s page is a good example of my collaborative process with Abi. For this page, I wanted to tease/foreshadow an important character that Abi and I created, who’s going to be very important later in the story. I knew that this individual would be hurt and wrapped in bandages, and someone would be taking care of him, but I didn’t know what the setting would be like.

I asked Abi. She had the idea that our mystery man would be in a world of cat people, and she named that world Clarmya. Later, I wrote the script for this page, and ran it by her. She said no, she didn’t like Clarmya, she wanted the place to be named Catagonia. “But,” I said, “You named it Clarmya.” I’m old, and rigid in my thinking. And I thought Catagonia was too silly a name. I tried to talk her out of it, but she insisted, and I try not to overrule her ideas. I changed the script so that it’s the town of Catagonia on the world Clarmya. And I’m happy with it. This is what usually happens–I’m unsure about one of Abi’s ideas, I grudgingly give in, and then later realize that it’s great.

Catagonia really came to life when Sam drew it. The little touches, like the loaf of bread and the stained glass windows, make it come to life and feel like a bustling little town with its own culture and history. Now I’d like to see a whole comic set there.

The Art of the Decapus

You guys, I’m so excited . . . we released two new pages this week, and Sam “Electric Artist” Albert really outdid herself.

On Tuesday, we shared Page 176, in which Dr. February lists off the Decapus’s 10 methods of attack. I thought it would be fun to do something different, break away from our normal 6-panel grid, and take up a whole page with a list. Abi came up with most of these weapons; I think I pushed for the freeze ray? I know Magic, Plant, Sickness, and Evil are all hers. Normally we wouldn’t lay out a page like this, because it’s hard to tell what order to read the panels in, but since it’s a list, the panels don’t matter. The reader is free to find her own path. And those tentacles really look great, don’t they?

Today, we shared Page 177, in which the battle with the Decapus begins. I’m a big fan of a lot of things Sam did here, but in particular I’ll point out the sense of movement and excitement, which is important in a fight scene. The Electric Team had such an easy time destroying the robots last issue, but we can see that they’re in big trouble now. Look at how overwhelmed they are–and the Decapus has only used five of its ten arms! Things are looking bad. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see the next page.
