Bart Hill and the Little Wise Guys

We have a new page out, written by me, Leighton Connor, and dynamically illustrated by Josh Burnett. (Order your copy of his gaming zine Crepuscular today!)

I’ve mentioned before that Bart “Daredevil” Hill is a pre-existing comic book character; he was originally created by Jack Binder, and first appeared in Silver Streak #6 in 1940. We can’t give Binder all the credit for creating the Bart Hill we know today, though, since the character was substantially changed by Jack Cole for his second appearance. Jack Cole, who later created Plastic Man, was a brilliant cartoonist, one of the greats of his era. It was Cole who made Daredevil a successful character. In 1941, after Cole had left, Charles Biro took over the character, and would continue to write and draw his adventures until 1950. Which, incidentally, means that Daredevil outlived the original Flash, whose comic was cancelled in 1949.

Anyway, we were talking about Charles Biro. In 1942, in Daredevil #13, Biro introduced a group of supporting characters called the Little Wiseguys. That’s them, on today’s page–Curly, Jock, Scarecrow, and Pee Wee. These characters eventually took over, reducing our man Bart Hill to a supporting character in his own comic. So obviously they’re an important part of Daredevil’s lore, and if we’re going to tell a story from his past, they need to be in it. Also, when I asked Josh to draw this comic, his first question was, “Will it have the Little Wise Guys in it?!?” I couldn’t tell him no.

You don’t have to know any of this background information to follow the story–it still makes sense if they’re just random neighbor kids who noticed some weird stuff happening–but I always like to know where characters came from, and I assume some of you do as well. And I think it’s important to give Charles Biro credit for all the quality work he did, over all those years.

Time Troubles Begin Today

by leighton on May 29, 2018

Page 227 is here! We’re thrilled to welcome aboard artist Josh Burnett for “Time Troubles,” a six page story starring Bart Hill! This isn’t Josh’s first time working with the Electric Team–he was previously the artist on the Mr. Amazing solo story “Swords and Serpents.”  As we’ve mentioned before, you should check out Josh’s zine Crepuscular.

As you can see, “Time Troubles” starts shortly after the end of Chapter 8, with our heroes still at Swann Castle. Most of the story will be set in the past, though, in 1950s America. Stay tuned!

Sadness in Swann Castle

by leighton on May 22, 2018
Posted In: Uncategorized

Today sees the release of page 226, the last page of Chapter Eight, “Swann Castle.” This is a moment I’ve been imagining for a long time–I’m not sure how long, but definitely over a year, maybe two? The details were vague, but I’ve always known that Leeta would think she was on the verge of finding her father and find Findlay and Chrysanthemum instead. I wanted this page to be sad, to evoke an emotion in the reader, and Sam really delivered.

I should mention, though, that not all members of The Electric Team writing team support this page. Abi has disliked the idea since I first told her about it, because it makes her feel bad for Leeta, and at every stage of development she has told me that this ending is “terrible.” And she has the kind of expression that she has when she talks about the ending of the movie Rogue One which, by the way, is not a good kids movie.

Abi and I are normally in agreement on what happens in the comic, and when we’ve had differences in opinion I’ve often gone along with her vision. In this case, though, I think it’s an important character moment and a strong ending to the issue. Abi doesn’t like the sadness, but sadness is important in life and in fiction, so this time I overruled her.

For the creation of this page, I sent Sam a reference picture for Leeta’s pose, and she faithfully evoked it. It’s also a full-page image from the final page of an issue, and it’s from one of the all-time great American comic book stories; anybody recognize it?
