Ten Notes on Page 256
Page 256 is available, and has been for several days!
1. I’ve been so busy this week that I kept forgetting to write a blog post about this page. Oops! Also, as I’ve mentioned, I’m running out of things to say for this part of the story, which is why last time I only had five notes. How will I make it to the end this time? Read on and see!
2. Panel 2 glosses over a series of conversations between Brianna and Jaxula. There’s a whole story you could tell here; I hope to someday tell it. For now, we just need to know that they talked.
3. Sam and I had a miscommunication about panel 3, I wanted it to show both Brianna and Jason, I feel like it’s a jarring transition with just showing a close-up of Jason. Abi tells me I should not worry about this.
4. In panel 5, the fellow on the left is Yarko the Great. I’ve written about him previously; he was created by the great Will Eisner, he appeared in comics in the 40s, and he previously appeared in a couple of pages of the Electric Team, specifically in the story “Time Troubles” that Josh Burnett illustrated. We already knew, from that story, that Yarko was involved in recruiting people to fight the Ultimage.
5. The guy in the middle is Skelman the Sorcerer, previously seen a few pages ago when Jason turned him into stone and stole his spellbook. His hair has grown out quite a bit since then. Not a lot of time has passed, so there’s probably some magical reason. As I mentioned in a post a few days ago, when I read Jim Starlin’s most recent graphic novel I decided I really wanted Skelman to have Adam Warlock hair.
6. When Sam first drew Skelman in this panel, he was wearing a different outfit, but I thought it was too much to change his hair AND his outfit, for a character who’s only previously appeared on one page, and we needed to keep him somewhat recognizable, so I asked her to change his outfit back. That new outfit she drew was cool, though. We should use it sometime.
7. The woman on the right is Gold Lady, who is a member of the Super Team. We’ll be talking more about the Super Team next week, so I’ll go into more detail then.
8. Hey, I’ve made it all the way to eight! Great! But now what? Oh, let’s talk about the next page . . .
9. Sam and I have been emailing back and forth about the next page, which will showcase the army alluded to in the last panel here. There are lots of characters to get right, it’s going to be complicated for her to draw, but it’s something I’ve been looking forward to for a long time, and I’m very excited for it. You should be excited for it, too! It may be relevant in certain ways to some of you reading this.
10. This is page 23 of 30 of “Brianna’s Story.” The end begins next week! And I should have plenty of stuff to write about!
